12 Most Useful & Versatile Essential Oils and Their Uses

What are the most useful & versatile Essential Oils to have on hand?

Trying to answer that question is like trying to answer the question of which child of yours is your favorite. If someone asks you that question, chances are your first response is it depends on the day and situation, right?πŸ˜‰

While it’s difficult to say which are the most useful and important Essential Oils to have, I can give you a list of oils that are so versatile you’re guaranteed to find a few that you want to get ASAP to try out.

I suggest stocking up on these average, everyday essential oil rock stars and you’ll love them long after the trends of high-waisted pants and TikTok careers has faded.

1. Eucalyptus Globulus Essential Oil

Benefits:

It’s refreshing, exhilarating, and very cleansing! It is an earthy oil with a soothing, comforting aroma. Originating in China, Eucalyptus Globulus is one of three varieties of Eucalyptus essential oils available on the market. 

How to use it:

  • For A Quick Pick-Me-Up: Combine 3 drops of Eucalyptus Globulus with 3 drops of a carrier oil such as Coconut oil or Vegetable Oil, and rub it onto your chest and neck to invigorate your senses and your soul.
  • Freshening The Air: Put 3-5 drops on a cotton ball and put it in the corner or behind a piece of furniture 
  • Soothing Baths: Add a 3-5 drops in your bathtub and take deep breaths while you destress.

2. Lavender Essential Oil

Benefits:

Lavendar is calming, soothing, and healing. 

How to use it:

  • For Calming: Add 3-5 drops in a roller ball with a carrier oil and roll onto both temples to help in feeling calm
  • Hair Treatments For Dryness: To help treat dry hair add 2 tablespoons coconut oil, 3 drops Lavender, and 2 drops Cedarwood to a shampoo type of bottle. Apply to hair, let sit for 5 minutes, and rinse. Then, wash and dry as usual.
  • Skin Care: Add 1-2 drops of Lavender essential oil to your moisturizer daily, (morning and night) to rehydrate dry or cracked skin and help rid the appearance of blemishes.

3. Clary Sage Essential Oil

Benefits:

Clary Sage is a more complex oil. It has a sweet, floral, earthy aroma to it that both soothes and uplifts. It is native to the Mediterranean and northern Africa, and is a great oil for diffusing, much like most of the ones listed in this blog post.

How to use it:

  • Nighttime Sleep Aide: Add a 3-4 drops on a tissue or cotton ball, place in your pillowcase, and inhale the soothing and relaxing aroma as you fall asleep.
  • Combating Dry Skin : Adding 3-5 drops of Clary Sage to unscented lotion creates a floral scented moisturizer that replenishes the needed amount of hydration that dry skin needs.

4. Orange Essential Oil

Benefits:

Orange essential oil has an energizing aroma. This versatile essential oil is loaded with benefits and blends well with other essential oils for diffusing and to create natural household disinfectants and cleaners. 

How to use it:

  • Home Cleaners: Make an all-purpose cleaner with 1 cup water, 1 cup vinegar, and 10 drops Orange. Or you can get serious about sticky residue by adding a drop or two to an old cloth to tackle sticker and other types of residues on most surfaces. 
  • Anti-aging Aid: Use for smoother skin by adding a few drops of Orange in your regular face wash as part of your nighttime skin care.
  • Breath Freshener: Freshen your breath with a more a-peeling mouthwash (nailed itπŸ˜‰πŸ˜„). Add 1 drop each of Orange and Spearmint to 1 tablespoon of water. Swish for up to 1 minute and spit out.

5. Tea Tree Essential Oil

Benefits:

Tea Tree has an impressive list of uses and benefits. Also known as Melaleuca alternifolia, this Australian native is one of the most versatile essential oils in the world! No joke. There are so many benefits to this particular oil, I plan to do a post in the very near future just on Tea Tree oil itself, and I will share a great amount of them. From an anti dandruff treatment to being a mosquito and other insect deterrent, this oil is AMAZING and a must have.

How to use it:

  • Odor Eliminator: Diffuse Tea Tree oil in a stuffy room to battle bad odors.
  • Apply To Cuticles: Add a few drops to a cotton ball and rub on skin and nails for happy, healthy-looking fingers and toes.
  • Blemish Eraser: Add a drop of Tea Tree to a cotton swab and apply directly to blemishes for healthier, brighter, and balanced skin.

6. Peppermint Essential Oil

Benefits:

This one is a nonnegotiable must have. It is right up there with Tea Tree oil in the ranking of versatility and uses. This is one of the most popular essential oils because of its many possible uses. It leaves a tingling, cooling sensation, and it has a familiar fresh scent that is particularly uplifting. Many think of Christmas when this oil is diffused because of its candy cane like aroma.

How to use it:

  • Relieve Tension: Dilute Peppermint with a carrier oil and apply to the neck, forehead, temples, and jaw to battle head tension. It works wonders on headaches.
  • Wake-up call: Diffuse when you feel yourself dozing off at your desk for an energizing aroma to avoid the midday slump that many of us struggle with.
  • Add To Shampoo In Morning Shower: Add Peppermint essential oil to shampoo and massage your scalp for a refreshing way to start the day.

7. Frankincense Essential Oil

Benefits:

Frankincense is A-MAZ-ING! It's a multitasker—it benefits the body and speaks to the soul. This earthy oil that has been around since the literal dawn of time, and is even spoken of in the Bible, is one of the most versatile essential oils. Its uses include from enhancing beauty, aiding in mediation, to aiding in pain relief in headaches. It supports a trend we hope never disappears: self-care!

How to use it:

  • Meditative Aid: Diffuse small amounts during prayer, yoga, or spiritual practices to stay focused and present.
  • Skin Moisturizing Aid: Add Frankincense to face lotion and apply morning and night to moisturize skin and give a smooth appearance.
  • Centering Aid: Rub a few drops into your hands, cup lightly over your nose, and breathe deeply to enjoy the earthy, grounding aroma.

8. Rosemary Essential Oil

Benefits:

Rosemary is more than an herb you toss on top of a homemade dish. The essential oil from this woodsy botanical goes way beyond marinara. It has many benefits and can be used for many different things from homemade air fresheners to homemade bug repellent with certain insects, and can even help with brain function.

How to use it:

  • Natural Air Freshener: Bring the crisp scent of the outdoors in with a DIY air freshener spray: 8 ounces distilled water, 5 drops Rosemary, 5 drops Lemon, and 3 drops Lavendar essential oil. Spritz on blankets, sheets, couches, and throughout your home.
  • Hair Treatment: Mix 2 drops Rosemary and 1 drop Cedarwood essential oil with a small amount of Coconut Oil. Massage onto scalp to help hydrate damaged hair.
  • Healthy Skin Care Aid : Add 1 drop Rosemary Oil to 4 drops Jojoba Oil. Dip a cotton ball in the mixture and apply to freshly washed face for a final cleanse.

9. Cedarwood Essential Oil

Benefits:

This oil not only has an earthy, woodsy scent that smells awesome when diffused, it helps with various things from being an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic, to a diuretic, insecticidal, and even antifungal. It is one of those that is super handy to have on hand at all times for this reason. 

How to use it:

  • Acne Treatment : UsCedarwood Oil as a spot treatment on pimples, blackheads, or whiteheads. Dilute the oil with a carrier oil such as Coconut Oil, apply it to your skin using a swab or cotton ball, and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing. You can also add Cedarwood Oil to commercially prepared treatments, such as face creams.
  • Use as a Repellent on Certain Insects/Pests: Topically applied, Cedarwood Oil helps repel fleas, ticks, and moths from fabric, people, and pets. Be sure to dilute the oil if you are applying it to your skin or using it on your pet. As well, keep in mind that some essential oils are dangerous for pets. Make sure to check with a veterinarian prior to using it on your cat, dog, or other animal.

  • Use For Anxiety: According to an animal study reported in Physiology and BehaviorTrusted Source, the cedrol in Cedarwood Oil may have a soothing effect on mood, making it beneficial for anxiety and reducing stress. Diffusing 5-7 drops in your diffuser to fill your home with the earthy, soothing scent.

10. Lemongrass Essential Oil

Benefits:

If you like a little earthy- herb scent with your citrus, you’ll love Lemongrass. The scent is sweet yet herbal, fresh yet musky. We adore Lemongrass because this citrus oil is not only a beast when it comes to eliminating bad odors, it is also an anti-inflammatory antibacterial, and antifungal.

How to use it:

  • Anti-Anxiety & Anti-Depressant: Diffuse 3-5 drops to help you relax and unwind when feeling anxious and down.
  • Post-workout Therapy: Mix a few drops with Wintergreen & Peppermint Essential Oils, as well as, a carrier oil such as Coconut Oil and rub on legs and feet to help prevent soreness.
  • Use To Feel Rejuvenated: Diffuse in the morning while getting ready to help you feel rejuvenated and refreshed.

*Side Note: Lemongrass Essential Oil may irritate the skin and cause a rash. To minimize the risk of skin irritation, a person should avoid applying lemongrass essential oil to the skin if:

  • they have allergies or skin conditions, such as eczema 
  • they have not diluted the oil first
  • they have broken or damaged skin

To check before use, do a skin patch test on a small area of skin, then wait 24 hours to see if a reaction appears before applying the diluted oil more liberally. Lemongrass essential oil can also cause dryness and stinging around the eyes, ears, mouth, and other mucous membranes, such as the genital area. For this reason, it is best not to use it on the face or put the oil into bathwater.

11. Patchouli Essential Oil

Benefits:

Although Patchouli is part of the mint family, this essential oil has a complex, unique aroma that is often found in perfumes, soaps, candles, and incense. It has a calming effect to help with depression, anxiety and stress. This is a great oil with many uses from relieving symptoms from colds, headaches, and upset stomachs, to helping with certain skin conditions like acne and dry cracked skin- it is a great oil to have in your stockpile.

How to use it:

  • Peaceful Bath: Add 8 drops of Patchouli into your bath and soak in to its relaxing scent.
  • Yoga Aid: Diffuse 8-10 drops before doing yoga &/or meditating to create a calming and grounding atmosphere. 
  • Squeaky-clean skin: Add 1-2 drops to your favorite face wash or serum to transform dry skin.

12. Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil

Benefits:

This oil has a spicy and sweet scent and is comforting as your favorite childhood toy. It has many health and beauty benefits, however, it is very strong and must be used sparingly. Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil can even be used to alleviate muscle and joint aches and pains.

According to a survey done by the Tisserand Institute, many manufacturers of Cinnamon Essential Oil recommend avoiding topical use altogether. However, a general recommendation is to keep the concentration of Cinnamon Oil low if it’s going to come in contact with skin. For example, one guideline of .01% concentration or less is equivalent to 1 drop of Cinnamon Oil for 30 to 40 milliliters (mL) of carrier liquid.

How to use it:

  • Make it Smell Like Christmas Anytime: Celebrate the holidays any day. Diffuse Cinnamon Bark with Lemon Essential Oil and savor the warm, calming aroma.
  • Sore Feet Relief: Dilute a few drops with Coconut Oil and massage into tired feet before bed.
  • Kitchen Odor Eliminator: De-stink the kitchen sink! Run your garbage disposal, add 3-5 drops of Cinnamon Bark, and let the scent spice up your kitchen like freshly baked pie.

**Avoid direct sunlight or UV rays for up to 48 hours after applying product to skin!

While doing some research for this post I learned a few new things about these oils myself.
